How eBay profit is calculated

Estimated profit starts with the expected sale price and subtracts the product’s buy cost, marketplace fee, promoted-listing ad fee, shipping and packaging. The calculator treats the eBay fee and ad rate as percentages of the expected sale price. That makes it useful for a fast sourcing estimate when you know the likely selling price but have not created the listing yet.

The formula is: sale price − buy cost − marketplace fee − ad fee − shipping − packaging. For example, a product that sells for $30 is not a $20 profit simply because it costs $10 in the store. Selling fees, a shipping label and packaging can reduce that apparent spread substantially. Enter realistic numbers for your category, promotion strategy and fulfillment method.

Profit versus ROI

Profit is the estimated dollar amount left after the costs entered above. ROI compares that profit with the buy cost: profit ÷ buy cost × 100%. A $5 profit on a $5 purchase and a $5 profit on a $50 purchase have the same dollar return but very different ROI. Reviewing both helps a reseller compare cash efficiency and actual dollars earned.

Margin is different

Margin compares profit with the sale price rather than the buy cost: profit ÷ sale price × 100%. ROI answers how efficiently purchase capital may perform. Margin shows how much of the customer’s payment remains after the costs entered. Neither number replaces checking demand, competition and listing condition.

What Max Buy means

Max Buy is the highest estimated purchase cost that would still meet the target ROI entered in the calculator, assuming the expected sale price and other costs remain unchanged. It can turn a phone calculator into a practical store decision: compare the shelf price with Max Buy before placing the product in your cart.

Max Buy is not a guarantee. If the item sells for less, shipping costs more, the fee rate changes or a return occurs, the final result changes. Use a conservative expected sale price and include every cost you can reasonably estimate. Sales tax paid when sourcing, inbound transportation, storage, returns and labor are not included unless you incorporate them into one of the entered cost fields.

Why shipping and fees matter

Shipping can be one of the largest costs on a lower-priced or heavy item. Measure packaged weight when possible, account for dimensional weight on larger boxes and avoid assuming that buyer-paid shipping has no cost. Marketplace fee rates can vary by category and account conditions, while promoted listing fees depend on the ad rate selected. The calculator lets you enter the percentages you expect instead of claiming one fee fits every eBay sale.

This free eBay ROI calculator is intentionally manual. It does not search eBay, retrieve sold listings or use a DealMeter analysis.
